During the Future Green City Student Challenge students from the Built Environment programmes at Hogeschool Utrecht and BUas worked together on a case given by the municipality of Utrecht.

The assignment? The development of an integral plan for greening the neighbourhood Noordwest in Utrecht, improving the living environment for the people and wildlife while making the neighbourhood more climate resilient.

When greening an existing neighbourhood various challenges related to all three of BUas’ Built Environment specialisations need to be addressed.

  • Urban Planning: How to deal with parking, charging infrastructure and garbage collection?
  • Mobility: How to create public support for green initiatives when these come at such costs as reduced parking capacity?
  • Urban design: What urban qualities can be created when you have limited space?

The week was packed with guest lecturers, inspiration sessions, site visits and of course time to work on the project, guided by lecturers from both HU and BUas as well as advisors from the municipality and Stadswerk. In short, a unique and unforgettable experience.

The Future Green City Student Challenge was facilitated by Koninklijke Vereniging Stadswerk, together with Hogeschool Utrecht (HU) and Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas).
