The CIVITAS Initiative is a network of cities for cities dedicated to smart and sustainable transport in Europe and beyond. Since it was launched by the European Commission in 2002, the CIVITAS Initiative has tested and implemented over 900 measures and urban transport solutions as part of research, Living Lab, and support projects in 80+ cities Europe-wide.

Stijn says he got notion of this competition through his Built Environment study programme. “I found it challenging to tell a complete and personal mobility story. The fact that I could also get study credits by participating was an added bonus.”

His idea focused on cycling and how Amsterdam and Copenhagen are naming themselves "Bicycle Capital of Europe''. Stijn ended up comparing both cities in terms of cycling infrastructure. “Because I visited Amsterdam and Copenhagen, I could easily make the link between cycling and the personal aspect. I came to the conclusion that both cities have pluses and minuses in terms of bicycle infrastructure.” With his personal touch, Stijn managed to convince the jury and he came out as one of the winners of the competition.
