Inside the LAB: A better future for Bao'an

Our second-year Built Environment students put their skills to work by developing comprehensive strategies for Bao'an District in Shenzhen, China. Specializing in areas such as mobility, urban planning, and urban design, the students tackled some pressing challenges of modern cities. From mitigating the urban heat island effect and managing flooding to reducing pollution. 

Their creative interventions include:

• Green Corridors: Integrating nature into the urban fabric to cool cities and boost biodiversity.
• Energy-Efficient Buildings: Reducing environmental footprints while enhancing urban aesthetics.
• Climate-Adaptive Designs: Preparing urban spaces to withstand and adapt to changing weather patterns.
• Urban Farming: Transforming unused spaces into hubs of local food production and community engagement.
• Enhanced Mobility Systems: Redefining connectivity with smarter, more accessible transportation networks.

Each proposal is a step towards transforming Bao'an into a sustainable, future-ready district—one that not only meets environmental challenges head-on but also fosters thriving, connected communities.
